Hey all. Hope everyone is having an awesome Thursday. Book trailers are primarily used as a promotional tool to get readers interested in buying the book. I admit I watch movie trailers all the time, especially when I'm bored but mainly to get ideas of what I like and don't like in regards to book trailers. I am currently having a book trailer made for my upcoming novel, "Waiting on Heaven." Woohoo! So, I figured I'd post some book trailers that I personally like and see what you all thought of them so I'd know if creating future book trailers would be beneficial to me in the long run.
*Room by Emma Donoghue is by far my favorite book trailer. You have to watch it.*
After watching the trailers tell me...
- Does a trailer make you want to buy the book or at the very least make you interested in finding out more info?
- Have you ever bought a book after viewing a book trailer?
- Do you actively search for book trailers?
- Do you prefer words across the screen or voice-overs?
- What are some of your favorite book trailers?

I have to admit I've never bothered to look at a book trailer before, but you picked some that changed my mind. I loved the Black Prism, the scenes were awesome. But I have to agree with you, the first was the best and it makes me want to go pick up the book. I liked them all excpet Crave. I think I'm partial to the combination of voiceover and words on the screen. The one with just words didn't tickle my fancy though. I'm excited to tsee the trailer for your upcoming book.
ReplyDeleteSadly, I can't view the trailers from my work computer, but I can tell you this: to me, book trailers are a cool extra. I don't seek them out and have never bought a book because of its trailer. Some of them are pretty awesome, though. The trailer for the Maze Runner was uber-intriguing. :-)
ReplyDeleteJade: Some trailers are like mini-movies, which I'm sure come with a hefty budget. But I like voice-overs too, but it's hard to find the right voice unless you're ready to spend some money. I still can't decide. Still in development stage of it so I guess I have a little time still. :-)

It's a little scary trying to decide what's worthy of dollars in marketing without wasting dollars or time. But it's always best to ask those that utilize the product you are trying to sell, which is why I knew it would be great to ask you all. :-)

ReplyDeleteAs for Book trailers, I don't look for them or trust them so much. When I want to know more about a book or an author I google and look for a traditional review.
My attention span and book trailers don't play well together.
ReplyDeleteWhile I've seen a few entertaining book trailers, my issue with the remainder is that they're not 30 seconds or less. Anything more than that loses me.

ReplyDeleteI don't necessarily think book trailers will be exactly as the book, but I like them because it does make readers aware that there's a book available or at the least what the concept is about.
But I totally concur that traditional book reviews are far better at conveying information about a book from different sources and perspectives.

I totally agree Kenn, long trailers don't do anything for me either, unless they are very interesting and entertaining and usually that means they spent a lot in making it. I've seen some lengthy one that are pretty good. So it can go either way. But I think 30 seconds, 45 tops is a good estimate.

ReplyDeleteOf the four you have here, I've read only Room, and I'm not sure the trailer would have enticed me to pick it up (that would have been a loss).
I'll have to look for some for books I'm interested in and then form an opinion.

I wish I could be more helpful here, but I don't do book trailers unfortunately. I never watch them - the few I watched didn't get me intrigued either. :(

ReplyDeleteI find the voice overs effective for certain books but not others. I don't know if that would work for yours...like it works for Room. But I'm partial to the more movie style book trailers...they always keep my attention.
ReplyDeleteRoom won me over. Very very good indeed. Book trailers are more and more popular but I simply don't see any point of them.
ReplyDeleteI do like some book trailers - BUT they have to be made well. Things that make them better are live action, like a commercial. I don't care for still shots with words on the screen. The worst I have seen featured lots of writing on the screen and a voice over reading completely different sentences. My brain couldn't handle it!
ReplyDeleteI never heard of book trailers before, but I thought "Room" was the best one in this group--intriguing. I usually read books based on recommendations from others whose taste I trust.

I don't watch book trailers. I tried to watch a couple of the trailers you posted, but I gave up and went to Amazon to check out the book descriptions instead. I think I'm one those people where I don't truly have a preference because I'm not going to watch them. It just isn't my thing.
ReplyDeleteI have to admit I don't often watch book trailers... though I did for a recent read ("Bedbugs") and was surprised that it was a lot of fun. Some people seem to love them. It seems like you almost *have* to have one these days. I guess I would want to make sure it is very well done and really captures the spirit or mood of your book. One perk of the trailers for use in your PR is that bloggers like us can use them to help spice up a blog post with a little visual or even become the center of a blog or facebook post.
