Read Banned Books Week Hop and Giveaway

This week the book blogging community is having a blog hop and giveaway in celebration of Banned Books Week (BBW) by the American Library Association an annual event supporting the freedom to read and the importance of the First Amendment. The blog hop is fittingly called Read Banned Books Week Hop hosted by I Am A Reader, Not a Writer and I Read Banned Books.

Held during the last week of September, Banned Books Week highlights the benefits of free and open access to information while drawing attention to the harms of censorship by spotlighting actual or attempted bannings of books across the U.S. Fortunately, while some books were banned or restricted, in a majority of cases the books were not banned, all thanks to the efforts of librarians, teachers, booksellers, and members of the community to retain the books in the library collections.
There will be ONE (1) international winner and FIVE (5) U.S. winners for this giveaway. The international winner receive $25 towards a purchase(s) at the Book Depository. (Please make sure the Book Depository delivers to your location)

Below are some faux book boxes that look like decorative books. I think they are gorgeous. There are FIVE (5) of them. You can place them on your book shelf for decoration or use them to hide important items. I will not tell you what you will receive in the box because it's Banned Book week, what fun would that be? SO I AM BANNING YOU ALL FROM SEEING WHAT'S INSIDE :-). Once the winners have been chosen, I will post a picture of what will be included in each book box. Each of the five giveaways for U.S. residents will contain at least one book that was placed on a banned list or challenged list along with whatever else tickles my fancy. It will be book related as well. :-)

Rules:
  • There is one mandatory rule for this giveaway and that is you MUST follow my blog by GFC, RSS or Email. All other requests on the Rafflecopter form are optional but will gain you extra entries into the giveaway.

So that's SIX WINNERS, YEP SIX (6). Five U.S. and one international. Feel out the Rafflecopter form below. Click the button that says in Click the Instructions tab first. Once you have completed the task, then click, I Did It.

Also, this is a hop, so if you look to the left on my sidebar, you will see a long list of blogs that are also participating in the Read Banned Books Week Hop. There are 257 blogs with giveaways just waiting for you to enter. So hop on over to as many as you wish for more chances to win.

Good luck and Blessings!

*The book by Donna Hill is not included. I just put it inside to show you how spacious they are inside. The large book boxes measure somewhere around 16 -18 inches tall, they are quite large.*

  1. Hi there and thanks so much for the giveaway! One of the banned books which I simply adore and which marked my youth is "The catcher in the rye". I have read it several times and I still think it is such an inspiring book!

  2. Thanks for this great giveaway and thinking about international followers

And here some that are not on the ala list are chalenged too...like vampire academy if can understand that some books are not for the age said ( with some exception because maturity depend on each individual)i don't think they should be banned.

  5. I'm a fan of most banned books, but last year I specifically read Speak for the first time. I have no idea why this book is controversial, it's not explicit and in the end it's a very empowering book for young women. But I also have to go with my Harry Potter books, because I will most likely be re-reading these books until my dying days.

Thanks for the giveaway- it's a brilliant idea!

  6. I love The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck and I think it's ridiculous that it was ever banned. No, wait, I find it ridiculous that ANY book was ever banned. So there! :-)

  12. I've read The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Catcher in the Rye, To Kill A Mockingbird...I understand that books like Brave New World should have some warning (??) - I read that book when I was probably too young to get the idea of whole book and I didn't know what to think abou the book.
But Harry Potter, His Dark Materials, and I've also seen books like Twilight and Hunger Games on the banned-books list...well, it suprise me and sometimes I really don't get it :(

    thanks for the giveaway!

  13. Thanks for this awesome giveaway!! I read banned books every year too, so far my favorite is Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, which I just read last week, so maybe that's why. :)

  14. Thanks Margaret, Stephanie, Zoey and Aths for stopping by. Judy Blume has always been a favorite. Some of her books should be screen by parents to make sure it's age appropriate, but that's for all books.

    Good luck everyone.

  22. Harry Potter! How can this series be banned, ridiculous

  23. Lovely giveaway, thanks! I got the impression that some banned books were banned just because people didn't understand the message...or were too stupid to understand their message.

  24. Hi!

My favorite banned book is definitely The Twilight Series.I don't understand why it was banned as it is a very good series.

  28. Lena, I just want to say that you always have the most unique giveaway prizes! I love it!

There are so so so many books that have been banned or challenged that amaze me. Though, going through this hop this week, I'm kind of proud of myself for having read as many as I have! Plenty more to go though.... the list never ends, sadly.

  29. I love your prize idea, how fun! My favorite banned book on the list for this year that I actually read this year is the Hunger Games.

  30. I've never understood the mentality behind the banning of books, history & literature both show that the attempt to ban something never works & more likely will spark a greater interest in the banned item.

  32. I've read SO many good banned and challenged books that it is REALLY hard to pick a favorite. To Kill a Mockingbird is high on my list and so is The Catcher in the Rye!

    ReplyDelete
  33. I'm quite happy with the banning of Potter, although for probably totally different reasons than those put forward by whatever stupid organisation thought it clever to ban books in the first place. For me just can't stand them, although not serious about banning them as you probably worked out via the above remarks, I think Vonnegut's Slaughter house 5 is on the list so I'll choose that. Thanks.

  34. That is such a creative giveaway! It reminds me of the faux books i have on my shelf that are for halloween - they have motion sensors and play music and then move with someone walks by. No hidden compartments though.

    Thanks for the awesome offering!

  36. Well, I found out earlier that Bridge to Terabithia is banned … and that is a childhood favorite of mine as well as a sensitively written book about the death of a child that is just an important book for kids to read.

    Love your giveaway system. Neat!

And the books that can hide things in them are SO COOL! I've always wanted something like that!

  37. Always loved The Catcher in the Rye

  38. Thanks for the giveaway!!! A few years ago I read the book Forever by Judy Blume and I absolutely loved it and I can't believe it's banned.

    ReplyDelete
  39. My overall favorite would probably be Harry Potter. I find it ridiculous that it's banned for such a trivial reason. They are truly wonderful books that if you look at them the right way can actually teach a lot.

    Awesome giveaway by the way!

  40. That's easy, Harry Potter, The Giver, A Wrinkle in Time, and Tiger Eyes. Of course I had no idea that A Wrinkle in Time and Tiger Eyes were ever banned or challenged when I read them. =)

    ReplyDelete
  41. Well Harry Potter and Vampire Academy. Now I'm dying to read The Hunger Games because I've heard so many great things about this book that I feel like I love it already but we'll see when I read it!

    ReplyDelete
  42. Twilight, harry Potter, Gossip Girl! How can some of these even be banned? Doesn't make sense seeing that millions of kids have read them

    ReplyDelete
  43. The more I read about banned books, the more absurd it seems. I heard that some school committee banned The Dairy of Anne Frank because "it was a real downer". So I guess we should never read any history books?
And oh, great giveaway. I'm not sure if, as a Canada dweller, I'm eligible to win those faux books, but I do love them!

  44. My favorite banned book is The Hunger Games.
    Thanks for the giveaway !!!

  45. I have a small and growing collection of banned books. But I am particularly fond of Huck Finn (in part because I am particularly fond of Mark Twain)!

    ReplyDelete
  46. My favourite banned book would have to be any of the Harry Potter books or To Kill a Mockingbird (the only prescribed text I thoroughly enjoyed).

Thanks for hosting this great giveaway, Lena:)
